David Chalmers

David Chalmers

David Chalmers was Lib Dem candidate for the Parliamentary seat of Torridge and West Devon in 2017 and 2019 and is Parliamentary Spokesperson for the constituency. As a local councillor, he was elected Mayor of Northam in 2020 where he has upgraded and strengthened the council's work in tackling the Climate Emergency, helped to safeguard public spaces, and shown steady leadership during the Covid crisis.

Commitment to the community

David lives in Appledore and is deeply involved in supporting the local community not only as a councillor but as a governor of Petroc College and chair of the local diversity charity Sunrise. Previously a councillor in Fremington, David is passionate about improving public services and the local infrastructure, attracting investment and more high-paid skilled jobs, and protecting the environment of northern Devon. In 2000 he was elected Vicechair of the board of DALC - the Devon-wide grouping of Parish and Town Councils.

Liberal democratic values

David is a champion of internationalism, democracy, and human rights, having co-founded the Kaleidoscope Trust, today one of the world's leading organisations fighting for international LGBT+ rights. He is chair of the Lib Dem European Group which campaigns for peace, prosperity, and liberal values in Europe.

Competence and know-how

Before devoting himself to politics, David successfully managed the commercial operations of the Economist Group in Asia Pacific for 10 years and where his team won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2002 for its work in China. He also has experience at HM Treasury and a degree in German with European Institutions from the University of Edinburgh.
