GDP figures show economy is grinding to a halt under the Tories

GDP growth was flat in the three months to October while output in the manufacturing sector continued to fall, ONS figures published today have revealed. GDP figures show that the economy is grinding to a halt under the Tories.

Responding, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Torridge and West Devon, David Chalmers said:

"Today's figures show the economy is stagnating. Businesses need certainty and stability to invest and thrive and the Conservative have provided neither in their pursuit of a Brexit at all costs.

There is a danger that we treat this General Election as "business as usual". But what is at stake will affect our country for decades to come. Because the choice is between a hard Brexit government or a hard-left government. Both these extreme options gamble with our economic future and our livelihoods.

Businesses, both large and small I have met during the campaign in Torridge and West Devon now see the Liberal Democrats as the natural party of business. We have a long-term vision for a vibrant, outward-facing economy, powered by innovative business.

We want a country that is open to the world instead of retreating from it. And an economy that pursues the opportunities of the 21st century, not different versions of the past.

"It's not too late to stop Brexit and protect our economy. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats here in Torridge and West Devon is a vote to stop Boris, stop Brexit and build a brighter future for the country."

Responding, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Ed Davey said:

"Today's figures show the extent of Boris Johnson's economic incompetence. His pursuit of Brexit is causing the economy to grind to a halt, and the most vulnerable will be hit hardest if he isn't stopped.

"Our manufacturing sector is already being decimated by Brexit and this will be made even worse by Boris Johnson's plan to crash the UK out of the EU by December 2020.

"It's not too late to stop Brexit and protect our economy, so we can invest the £50 billion Remain bonus in our public services and tackling inequality.

"Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Boris, stop Brexit and build a brighter future for the country.
