Three of the area’s newly elected MPs will gather in Holsworthy next Saturday (15 February) to answer questions from the public and talk about what’s going on in Westminster.
Ian Roome, MP for North Devon, Ben Maguire, MP for North Cornwall, and Danny Chambers, well known as a local vet and now MP for Winchester, will join Phil Hutty, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Torridge and Tavistock, who will act as compere for an evening of ‘Politics and Pasties’. There will be opportunities to raise anything: from the situation with North Devon’s new hospital to potholes, solar farms, or the cost of a decent home.
Mr Roome, who has won praise for his efforts to push the Government to deliver on the promise of a new hospital in Barnstaple, said:
"I am looking forward to getting into what used to be the West Country Liberal heartlands and answering people’s questions. Politics and pasties - what a great combination!"
Danny Chambers, who won the Winchester seat in last summer’s General Election:
"It will be great to going back to where I grew up and trained as a vet and also cut my political teeth. This will be a great discussion, meeting old friends who I have campaigned with for many years"
Phil Hutty, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Torridge and Tavistock said:
“I am really looking forward to hearing from three of our new dynamic Lib Dem MPs. I’m hoping the audience will ask questions on such things like their life in parliament, their passions, their frustrations, as well as what the Lib Dems are doing in Westminster”.
Ben Maguire, who is the Liberal Democrat’s Shadow Attorney General, represents North Cornwall constituency which is just a few miles from Holsworthy. He said:
“I’m looking forward to meeting folks across the border, but I hope the pasties are Cornish!”
Claire Davey-Potts, who is organising the event on behalf of Torrington Liberal Democrats, said that they would certainly be local.
Lyndon Piper, Torridge District Councillor for Holsworthy, welcomed the initiative, saying:
“I am delighted to see three hard working MPs come to my home town to take part in political debate. It is something the area has been missing for some time, and I hope people take the opportunity to come along and engage.”
The event will take place in Holsworthy Memorial Hall from 7pm next Saturday 15 February. Tickets, which should be booked in advance by phone or text to 07986 783318 or 01769 520210, are £15, with a reduced rate for students and under 25s of just £5 per ticket. A licensed bar will be available.
