Mayor welcomes sea defence works

The Mayor of Northam, David Chalmers, has welcomed sea defence works which have been brought forward to protect Northam Burrows and Westward Ho! from winter storms. Speaking as the first lorries arrived with loads of rock armour, Councillor Chalmers said:

'Rising sea levels and an increase in the frequency and intensity of winter storms mean this work is essential to preserve the special character of the Burrows as well as protecting homes and businesses from flooding. Here in Northam we are in the front line of the effects of climate change and much more needs to be done to preserve our heritage as well as to reduce carbon emissions.

We anticipate that there will be some disruption from lorries over the next few weeks as the rock armour is put in place but I hope this will be kept to a minimum and that residents will understand the reason why it is necessary to take immediate action.

I am very grateful to Torridge District Council for bringing this work forward. They can count on active support from Northam Town Council. We have recently upgraded our Climate Emergency Committee to ensure that this agenda, which affects all our lives and livelihoods, is given the urgent attention it requires."

Work to reinforce the sea defences is expected to last until 20 January, with a short break over the Christmas period.
