Lib Dem candidate Sue Smith will join sitting councillors on Bideford Town Council after her by-election win last week.

Sue was elected with 340 votes, while Jason Murdoch, the Conservative candidate, polled 228. The turnout was 12.51%.

Speaking after the result was announced, Sue said:

‘I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all the residents of Bideford North Ward, who took the time and voted for me as a Lib Dem councillor. I feel strongly about Bideford as a community, and I hope to represent the views of residents and local businesses.’

Phil Hutty, Parliamentary spokesperson for Torridge and Tavistock Liberal Democrats, said:

‘This result is a big thumbs down for the Conservatives by the voters of Bideford North, who are fed up with the uncaring politics of the last few years. Sue is an experienced Youth and Community worker who will bring new energy into tackling key challenges like anti-social behaviour, as well as support for green initiatives and town centre regeneration.’
